The real difference in the game was turnovers. Despite shooting over 50%, The Wolves gave the ball away ten more times than did the Grizzlies. Coach Randy Wittman referenced bad shoorint choices.
"We have total a disregard for the game," coach Wittman said. "We take shots that have a one-in-five chance. We try no-look passes to nobody. It doesn't matter who we play. We turned the ball over. The Grizzlies made shots." |

Ricky Davis played great defense on Steve Nash and scored 17 points.
Garnett scored 15 points in the fourth, including a looping fallaway from the baseline that gave Minnesota a 118-109 lead with 1:55 to play, and put new coach Randy Wittman on the way to a win in his home debut.
"It's just about being a presence," Garnett said. "It's about making them have to deal with me. I will continue to take that approach. "I think we all felt bad when Case lost his job...No one ever wants to get fired or traded ... It was really heartfelt in letting (Wittman) know that we'll fight for you every night."
Madsen hit a fallaway jumper just outside the lane to cap an 8-0 run, then gave Minnesota a 112-107 lead with 3:38 to play after he scooped up a rebound and laid it in.
"Garnett scored more than a point a minute," wrote Kent Youngblood of the Star Tribune. "Ricky Davis ran himself ragged chasing Steve Nash. Mark Madsen hit all his three shots and played a big part in the Wolves' killer second-half zone."
Gordon Wittenmyer for Pioneer Press quoted Mark Madsen.
""If we can't get momentum off of this, something's wrong," Madsen said after Monday's big win. "I do think that we can get some momentum here and really make a push to get a high seed in the playoffs.""

(Los Angeles 1/27/07) Kevin Garnett had 32 points and 9 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Los Angeles Clippers in a game that had important playoff implications. Mike James came out strong with 17 points. Ricky Davis had 6 assists.
"It feels good to get a win," Garnett said. "We've been playing real hard. This has been a difficult week for all of us, and we're just trying to grind it out the best way we can. Randy's definitely trying to find us and get us to believe in what we're consistent at and what we're good at -- and that's defense."
"It was a big game for us because we are fighting with L.A. for a playoff birth right now and the race is close," wrote Mark Madsen in his Blog. "We had so many big contributions from the team. Mike James and KG played very well and Mark Blount hit a huge jumper late in the game. But my personal MVP goes to Ricky Davis tonight who reminded me of Ron Artest in regards to his defense on the Clipper's perimeter players. After the game, Kevin Garnett grabbed the game ball and brought it into the locker room to give to Coach Wittman. It's tough to win games in the NBA and now we've finally got one under our belt after the turmoil." |

Wolves led with 20 seconds to go |
(Portland 1/24/07 See AP) The Portland Trailblazers ruined Randy Wittman's debut as Wolves coach with a 101-98 win in overtime. Kevin Garnett led all scorers with 31 points, but had only 8 rebounds to break his double-double streak. Ricky Davis had 23 points.
"I felt these guys deserved to walk out of the building with a win tonight," Wittman said to AP.
Jarrett Jack made a driving layup with 28.7 seconds left in overtime to give the Blazers a 97-96 lead. Kevin Garnett answered with a turnaround jumper to give it back to Minnesota. After Portland retook the lead, KG had an opportunity for a last second three to tie the game, but it missed.
"We feel terrible. You've got to feel responsible when someone loses his job," Garnett said. "I looked at myself in the mirror and asked myself questions. Now I've got to answer those questions and apply them to this new situation."
With his three assists, Kevin Garnett became the fifth player in NBA history to have at least 18,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 4,000 assists.

(Phoenix 1/21/07) Randy Foye had 25 points and Troy Hudson 20 points as the Timberwolves dropped a 131-102 decision to the Suns. The Timberwolves played without Kevin Garnett and Ricky Davis.
"There's a reason this team has won almost 30 games in a row," Minnesota coach Dwane Casey said, "and they played like it in the third quarter. I was proud of how our guys competed without our two leading scorers. I thought they did everything they could. But Phoenix is one of the best teams I've seen in a long time, and I've been around it for a while."
"In this league, it's all about getting the opportunity to play," Hudson said. "I've just been keeping myself ready, working on my game, coming before and staying after practice. This is a long season. With my experience, 10 years in the league, I know it will always come back around." |

The teams played without Keving Garnett and Antonio McDyess for the last five minutes of regulation and during the two overtimes when they go tin a tussle over a McDyess elbow to Mark Madsen's neck area.
"This is the league. There's a lot of testosterone. This is a man's game and sometimes tempers flare and sometimes things are said, things happen. And sometimes when situations like that happen, you've just got to step up," said Mike James, who put his team ahead 89-86 with an amazing 3-pointer from the corner with Richard Hamilton in his face and only 13.8 seconds left in the first overtime.
"Everyone in this locker room is behind Kevin Garnett 100 percent," Madsen said.
Coach Flip Saunders, coaching just his second game at Target Center with the visiting team after nearly 10 seasons running the Timberwolves, put new arrival Chris Webber into the starting lineup so he could get more work with Billups.
Mark Blount scored 22 points with 15 rebounds. Garnett had 19 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Trentaon Hassell, Mike James and Randy Foye each scored 16 points.

"I was very disappointed in our approach and our sense of urgency," Minnesota coach Dwane Casey said. "We're not in a position in our program yet to come out and wait until we get behind to play."
And the Hawks were just as impressive on the defensive end, swarming around Garnett to make every shot tough for him. Garnett was double-teamed, sometimes even triple-teamed, every time he touched the ball. |

Blount's 3-pointer came with one second on the shot clock, and 12.8 seconds left to give Minnesota a 92-88 lead.
"It means everything that we've been together," Casey said. "We had the big trade last year, and we got three key guys in October, and I've been saying all along that we just need time together.

We wanted to slow them down and make them do something else."
Minnesota won for the fifth time in six games. The Timberwolves' last six games have all been decided by six points or less.

"Minnesota shot 61.9 percent in the first quarter while the Grizzlies hit just 34.8 percent," observed Rick Alonzo of the Pioneer Press. "Give Minnesota credit for hitting shots (51.9 percent in the game)." |

Derek Fisher comes through...
Warriors versus Jazz playoff... |
(See Mad Dog Blog for details) I played with Derek Fisher for three years while playing for the Lakers and he is one of the most professional people I have ever met in any field. When I got to the Lakers Derek was going through a very serious foot injury and was on the injured list for some time. One time while he was injured we as a team were playing terribly. Before one of the games, Derek gave an impassioned speech while in street clothes and really tried to encourage the guys to take up their level of play a notch. Everyone in the locker room from Shaq to Kobe to Slava Medvedenko was all ears. Afterwards, Phil Jackson referred back to Derek as the emotional leader of our group
Derek was always working on his jump shot. There were so many days when Derek would be there early at the gym with his brother feeding him passes and giving him feedback on fine-tuning aspects of his jumper.

Dog comments on upcoming draft
|
(From Dog Blog) Trenton Hassell told me that if he was an NBA General Manager he would rather have the 2nd pick in this year’s NBA draft instead of the first pick. When I asked him why, he said, “Because you can’t go wrong with the 2nd pick….I’d hate to be the GM that had to choose between Greg Oden and Kevin Durant.”
When NBA teams are getting ready to make a draft selection, nothing is left to chance. Teams will fly groups of players in to work them out and match them up against each other to see who is toughest and who competes hardest. A lot of teams administer the same written, multiple-choice psychological survey. I must have seen the same survey four times from four different teams. One team (Chicago Bulls) actually brought in a psychologist to administer a whole set of unique tests. One of the sit down interviews in Chicago may have been a type of IQ test. I’m still not sure.
They test your strength in the weight room, your body fat, watch how you interact with the equipment manager and trainers, and seem analyze everything you do and say. Then, a lot of teams will have you sit down with the General Manager for an interview. I still remember my interview for the LA Lakers. “Do you drink?” Continued at the Blog... |

Guy you love to hate
Quote by Steve Aschburner
|
(MN 2/4/07) Star Tribunes Steve Aschburner quotes Mark Madsen after Cavaliers game...
"It takes a pest to know a pest. Wolves forward Mark Madsen, the sort of player who can get under an opponent's skin, has high praise for that same grating ability in Cleveland's mop-topped Anderson Varejao.
"The thing about Varejao is, he plays with a high energy level and he's physical," Madsen said of the Brazilian banger. "So what happens is, he's in there going for a rebound and, let's be honest, he knows how to sell [contact] to the refs. He knows how to sell a flop. I'm not saying he's a flopper, but if he gets hit, he's probably going to get a call. Because his head whips back and he goes to the ground."
Steve continues...
"It's all those, uh, floppy locks adding to the effect. Frequently accused of thespianism in feigning violent contact, Varejao has taken a league-leading 76 charging fouls this season."

Jack Nicholson is a regular at the Lakers home games and he travels on the road a lot to watch his team (The Lakers, of course) play. But my other friend said that he was a "Nicholson Impersonator" and that it really wasn't him. Well, I wrote about all of this in yesterday's blog right here on MarkMadsen.com/blog. Mark works on injured ankle |
(Mad Dog Blog 7/5/07) We are struggling right now plain and simple. Our trainer Gregg Farnam had me stay at home so I was not at Boston for the game. Gregg wanted me to get a lot of treatment for my injured ankle so that hopefully i can get back to playing this week. I am actually dying to be ready for the Lakers game. It's always great playing against Phil Jackson and Kobe.
I was lucky to have TV's in our training room and weight room, so while I was doing all of the rehab in the Target Center with our assistant trainer, I watched as much of the game as I could. Troy Hudson, Garnett and Ricky Davis all hit huge three pointers for us. But it was really Troy who gave us a huge spark. Troy has always had big games against the Lakers, so I'm thinking he'll probably start again on Tuesday when L.A. comes to the Twin Cities.
