Team defense gives Wolves 88-69 win over Hornets; stop four game slide

(Minneapolis 12/21/2005 by Poundmaster) The Minnesota Timberwolves made things right tonight with a defensive game that delivered an 88-69 win and stop a four game losing streak during which three games were lost by a total of five points. At one point the Wolves led by 32 points.
Wally Szczerbiak led Wolves scorers with 21 points and Kevin Garnett scored 17. Rookie Rashad McCants tied his season high with 14 points.
The Timberwolves went on a 13-2 run to start the 3rd quarter to go up 63-34, a 29 point lead. The score was 68-41 with 53 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter. But the Timberwolves ended the quarter up 70-45.
The Timberwolves soared to a 19-point lead on a KG stuff with 1:21 left to go in the first half. Garnett had 7 points and 3 rebounds in the first half. Szczerbiak led the team in first half scoring with 9 points.
The Timberwolves cured their first quarter blues tonight going up by 10 points 26-16 in a excellent defensive display. Wally had 7 points in that quarter. Then, the Wolves held the Hornets scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second quarter. Garnett got plenty of rest, not having to return to the game until 6:30 remaining in the first half.
"The Timberwolves are helping everyone else out tonight on defense," said Bob Lanier who was at the game tonight to award KG with a community service award. "And that is why they are doing so well here in the game."
The Timberwolves shot 58% from the field in the first half, and controlled the paint 24-12. Their largest first half lead was 24 points, but they went up by 32 points in the 3rd quarter. Mark Madsen had 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. |
