(New York 1/16/06 by Poundmaster)  Troy Hudsen hit a long three as the shot expired to put the Minnesota Timberwolves up over the New York Knicks 95-90 with only 7.3 seconds remaining in the game. Kevin Garnett then sealed it with a free throw and a 96-90 victory in a game where the real story was how the Timberwolves zone defense vexed the Knicks offense most of the way.
Kevin Garnett had a double double 24 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists. Wally Szczerbiak had 24 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Eddie Griffin continue his defensive mastery with another 5 blocked shots and 6 offensive rebounds.
The Knicks pulled to within four points at 92-88 with 1:11 to go, but a costly turnover forced by the Wolves defense, gave the ball back to the Wolves. Earlier, a Hudson jumper and a Wally layup fended off a Knicks surge, Wolves lead Knick by 6 with 3:28 to go 90-82.
The Timberwolves zone defense stopped working midway during the 4th quarter as the Knicks closed a 19-point Wolves lead to within 5 points at 76-71. But the offense came alive again to build an 80-71 lead with Wally Szczerbiak hitting a nice fadeaway jumper from the left baseline.a Troy Hudsen three put the Timberwolves back up by ten at 83-73.
The Wolves took an 18 point lead 70-52 on a Wally two with 5:50 to go in the third quarter. Two Hassell free throws put the lead at 19, 72-53. But the Knicks stormed back on a 9-0 run to finish the 4th quarter with the T-Wolves leading 74-65. The Wolves missed the first 11 shots of the fourth quarter.  Marko Jaric opened the quarter with back-to-back layups to push the Wolve lead to 8 points at 56-48. The Wolves zone continue to force mistakes by New York. And the Wolves were shooting 50% at the 7:35 mark in the 3rd quarter. Trenton Hassle hit on drive and back-to-back Eddie rejections as the quarter closed to put the Timberwolves up on the Nets by a score of 52-47. The Timberwolves zone defense seemed to vex the Knicks in first half going.
The Timberwolves continued to shoot well in the 2nd quarter at 54% from the field, leading the Knicks 38-36. Rashad McCants' two put the Wolves up by five points at 41-36 with 6:54 remaining in the half. But a series of turnovers let the Knicks come back to trail by only one point before the Wolves pulled back ahead.
The Timberwolves took a 25-23 lead over the Knicks to end the 1st quarter. The Nets took the early lead in the game, going up by five points but the Timberwolves came steadily back to close to within on point 19-18 at the 2:32 mark in the 1st quarter. Then, a free throw by KG tied the game at 19-19 at the 2:05 mark in the 1st quarter. The Timberwolves took the lead on a 9-0 run 25-19, with Marko Jaric scoring two.
