Griffin leads Wolves to 90-85 victory over Pacers

(Minn 1/20/06 Poundmaster) Eddie Griffin gave the Minnesota Timberwolves a narrow 90-85 victory over the Indiana Pacers, scoring 19 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking 9 shots. Wally Szczerbiak had 20 points and Kevin Garnett, on a night when he could use the support, got it and scored 17 points with 8 rebounds.
"Defense was key to Minnesota's success," wrote Rick Alonzo of the Pioneer Press. "The Wolves held the Pacers to 38.8 percent shooting and contained Stephen Jackson, who had scored at least 20 points in five of the previous 10 games, to eight points through three quarters on 3-of-10 shooting. Jackson finished with 12 points."
Ron Dupree and Anthony Carter scored the first two Wolves buckets in the 4th quarter to put Minnesota up 71-58. The teams played even for about 6 minutes, then the Wolves up on the Pacers 78-65 with 6:10 to go.
Mark Madsen entered the game late in the 3rd quarter, grabbing rebounds and blocking a shot in the closing minutes of the third quarter, as the Timberwolves extended their lead to 65-49. Madsen hit two free throws to give the Wolves a 67-54 lead at the 1:15 mark.
As the game started, the Minnesota Timberwolves came blazing out of the blocks behind a Griffin career first quarter. The team shot 75% from the field and a 28-17 first quarter lead. Griffin had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks in the quarter.
Eddie Griffin made an excellent tipin at the 1:30 mark to put Minnesota up by 8 points 84-76, Then a full minute passed with no score, including a KG offensive rebound.
The Timberwolves continued to lead 82-74 behind the 10 for 10 free throw shooting of Wally Szczerbiak.
