(MN 1/25/06 by Poundmaster) The Memphis Grizzlies leading scorer and rebounder Pau Gasol chose tonight to come out of his scoring slump, scoring 30 points on 9 of 14 shooting and taking down 12 rebounds as the Grizzlies defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 107-87. It was the second T-wolves 20-point or more loss in two nights.
"We've got to regroup," Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey said. "We've got to come back together. This is us. Nothing is changing. No one else is coming in this locker room. ... I know there are trade rumors, but this is us. No one else."
Kevin Garnett stood pretty much alone again tonight with 29 points and 9 rebounds, 4 of those on offensive. Wally Szczerbiak had a rare cold spell starting out, missing 10 of his first 11 shots, but then began hitting for 15 points. He missed all three threes that he shot. The Timberwolves were outrebounded 42-34 but controlled the ball well with only 9 turnovers in the game.
Minnesota, which trailed by as many as 28 in the game, made a mini-rally early
in the fourth period as Garnett started taking the ball to the hole aggressively. The
Timberwolves were within 12 at one point. But Jones scored seven straight point
to extend the lead back to 18 with just over eight minutes left.
Minnesota missed 11 of its first 14 shots as the Grizzlies built the lead to 11. The advantage could have been larger if Memphis had not missed a trio of layups.
Gasol did not miss in the first 24 minutes, making all five of his shots and 8-of-8 free throws to help the Grizzlies to their highest-scoring first half of the season and a 62-38 advantage.
