(Houston 1/27/06 Poundmaster) Minnesota tried to acquire Ricky Davis from Cleveland in 2002, but failed. Tonight, three years later, Ricky Davis keyed a victory in his first game in a Timberwolves uniform.
With six seconds left, Davis fought to grab the rebound of a missed three, was fouled, and sunk both free throws to put the Wolves up 95-92 with 6 seconds left. Kevin Garnett then sealed the 96-92 victory with a free throw with 2.8 seconds to go in the game.
Garnett and Davis had 26 points. KG had 12 rebounds for his double double. Rookie Rashad McCants came alive tonight in the second quarter and scored 18 points on the night. Troy Hudson had 5 assists and played a key play making role in the closing minutes. Mark Madsen had 5 rebounds in 9:55 play.
Ricky Davis hit a key bucket with 1:08 remaining to put the Wolves up by 4 at 92-88. Then, down by two points, Kevin Garnett put the Wolves up by 3 points from the free throw lines and 14.4 seconds remaining in the game.
The Houston Rockets pulled even with the Timberwolves mid-way through the 4th quarter. At the 5:19 mark with the score tied at 80-80, Kevin Garnett put the Timberwolves up 84-80 from the free throw line and then a jumper.
The Timberwolves built a 15 point lead over the Rockets in the 3rd quarter on the strength of good defense, holding the Rockets to 36% shooting, while shooting 50% as a team from the field and 90% from the free throw line at the 7 minute mark. At one point the Rockets scored only 4 times in 20 tries.
Ricky Davis took little time after his arrival to his new Wolves' team, teaming with rookie Rashad McCants to score 29 points in the first half. The Rockets shot 70% for the first 9 minutes to run up a 17-10 lead over the new look Timberwolves. The Timberwolves came back on a 14-0 run in the 2nd quarter to lead the Rockets 46-37 at the 3:46 mark. Rashad McCants had 16 points in that second quarter.
