Summer Basketball Camps

Every young basketball player must
ask himself/herself the question: “Which basketball
camps should I go to?” Athletes should be methodical
and careful in their determination of this question keeping
the following considerations in mind: 1) What are my goals
from going to a basketball camp? 2) Am I seeking to gain exposure
to college basketball scouts and coaches? 3) What level of
conditioning do I currently have? 4) Am I trying to get game
experience? 5) Am I trying to improve my fundamentals?
At the highest level, some of the best summer
basketball camps for exposure include the prestigious
Nike All-American Camp, the Adidas ABCD camp, the various
camps directed by the Pump Brothers in the Los Angeles area.
Many AAU basketball programs have sprouted up throughout most
major population centers and these also can give exposure
at the different tournaments in Las Vegas, Californian, and
the East Coast.
Some of the best basketball
camps for fundamentals will always be at the local high
school and will likely be directed and overseen by the varsity
basketball coach of that high school. When it’s all
said and done, the high end summer basketball camps are great,
but in some ways, the camp at the local high school this summer
may be better than the all-star camps and tournaments. The
problem with all of the “all-star” and “AAU”
camps is that when you throw a bunch of athletes together
who all think they are great, there are never enough shots
or opportunities for all of them. If a player really is an
all star caliber talent, then they should be able to go to
the local facility and get many more shots and game-like situations
than trying to get the occasional shot with a bunch of ball-hogs
launching threes. Summer basketball camps will always remain
one of the best ways to improve skills and fundamentals prior
to each regular season.
